A New Church Home
Completed in 2002, the Forest Presbyterian Church building is styled in the traditional Virginia motif using a brick exterior, large welcoming windows and a distinctively Christian identity with its cross-topped steeple.
The Word of God and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, are at the heart of our faith and life, according to Presbyterian theology. The congregation gathers for worship around the Pulpit, the Communion Table and the Baptismal Font. The Bible, God’s Word to us, is on the pulpit, and the cup and plate are on the Communion Table. Generous windows and a soaring skylight remind us that Jesus Christ is “the light of the world.
The three windows in the chancel speak of the Holy Trinity--Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The center one depicts the cross, and represents God incarnate in Jesus Christ. Sunbeams and light, traditional symbols for the presence of God, radiate from the cross. The two side windows depict Baptism and The Lord’s Supper. We’re reminded of Baptism with the descending dove, flames of fire and a shell with drops of water. The chalice with grapes and wheat recall the body and blood of Christ, sacrificed for our redemption. The window design includes great arcs of wind on each side, signifying the Holy Spirit sweeping into the worship service and calling us to holy action.
The choir and musicians assume their roles as both leaders and participants in worship beside the chancel. Space is provided for a variety of instruments and for a growing music program. There is an organ, keyboard and provision for the sound and video needs of both traditional and contemporary worship services.
The congregation is gathered at the chancel in a semi-circular pattern, emphasizing that as we worship, we gather around the Word of God and the Sacraments, the Christ-ordained means of grace.
On the lower level is the nursery and toddler area. A large Christian education multiple-use hall has moveable classroom partitions for flexibility. A comfortable and well-equipped Christian education office/resource room is close to classroom areas.
The parking lot entrance has a generous amount of glass that invites people inside as they approach the building. A large gathering area inside the main doors offers hospitality and welcome before and after church events. The office suite is located immediately inside the parking lot entrance. Our goal is to provide a place for all God’s people; we have incorporated handicap access with an elevator at the main staircase.
